Islam and Sustainable Development: Integrating Spirituality and Social Responsibility

Abstract

This article explores Islam and sustainable development as a mandate of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The relationship between Islam and sustainable development is a necessity in order to create a balance between human needs and environtmental preservation. Islamic principle contained in the Al-Quran and Sunnah emphasize the importance of social responsibility and ethics in managing human resources, natural resources, and social resources. This is in line with the objectives of the Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs). In this context, spirituality or habluminallah becomes the basis that directs individuals and communities (social) to always be responsible for the environment and each other (habluminanas) which is passed on to future generations. Through Islamic teachings such as justice, compassion and wise management of resources, islam encourages its followers to contribute to maintaining ecosystem sustainability, social welfare and economic growth. This research aims to explore how the principles of Islamic spirituality can be optimized within the framework of sustainable development, as well as how to optimize society's contribution to this effort. This type of research is qualitative with a descriptive analysis approach. Data collection techniques such as literature review, observation and analysis were carried out in order to provide a comprehensive description. The analysis technique uses Miles and Huberman. The research results show that Islam encourages all its followers to contribute to maintaining the best sustainability of life and protecting ecosystems in nature. Combining spiritual values and social responsibility, sustainable development in an Islamic perspective not only focuses on economic growth, but also on social welfare and environmental preservation, creating harmony between humans and nature to be passed on to future generations.
