Spiritual Light in the Twilight Years: Socio-Religious Behavior of Elderly Nuns at the Shepherd Home

Abstract

Nuns are one of the professions that make someone to dedicate themselves to God. In the course of growing age, nuns will enter the elderly phase, so there will be a decrease in physical and mental functions experienced. This will make the nuns already have a few obstacles in providing services to the people, even some are no longer able to provide services due to illness experienced. One of the orphanages owned by the Lampung Catholic community providing services to elderly nuns is the shepherd's monastery. This research is a qualitative method. The data sources used in this study consist of primary data and secondary data. The data collection method uses observation and interviews. The method of data analysis in this study is by means of data reduction, data presentation and data verification. The informants in this study consisted of three key informants, two main informants and 2 additional informants. The results of this study reveal that the Good Shepherd monastery nursing home has various efforts in improving the social religious behavior of the elderly, especially through spiritual guidance which includes pastoral visits, counseling, and elderly fellowship worship. In addition, there is also physical guidance which includes hasta karya activities and health programs. These efforts are carried out on an ongoing basis so as to form certain patterns of behavior in the elderly. Positive changes in the behavior of the elderly can be seen from the effectiveness of the orphanage programs, which are reflected in their social interactions, such as mutual help and respect. The elderly's social care is also evident through their participation in various activities, such as attending funerals, fulfilling invitations, staying in touch, and providing prayer services for the community. From a religious perspective, this change in elderly behavior includes five dimensions: belief, knowledge, experience, worship practices, and application of religious teachings.
