Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between self-control and social anxiety with social media addiction tendencies in college students. By using quantitative methods, this study involved a sample of 60 students. Collecting data was done using a psychological scale in the form of a self-control scale (α=0.916), a social anxiety scale (α=0.919) and a social media addiction tendency scale (α=0.918). The data obtained were then analyzed using multiple regression analysis techniques assisted by SPSS 23.0 for Windows. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between self-control and social anxiety with social media addiction tendencies in college students. Self-control significantly predicted social media addiction tendencies (β = -0.327, p < 0.05). However, social anxiety did not significantly predict social media addiction tendencies (β = 0.122, p > 0.05). Further analysis revealed that the combined effect of self-control and social anxiety on social media addiction tendencies was significant (R2 = 0.176, p < 0.05). These findings suggest that self-control plays a crucial role in mitigating social media addiction tendencies in college students, while social anxiety may have a less direct influence.
