Abstract

Qur'anic interpretation (tafsir) in Malaysia faces various challenges, especially differences in methodology between the literal and contextual approaches, as well as the problem of limited Arabic language proficiency. This study aims to analyze the development of Qur'anic interpretation in Malaysia and the challenges that arise in its interpretation. The method used is a literature study that examines works of interpretation, scientific articles, and contributions from international scholars and local Islamic institutions. The findings of the study indicate that Qur'anic interpretation in Malaysia has developed rapidly since the 20th century, influenced by reformist thought such as Sheikh Muhammad Abduh and contributions from educational institutions such as JAKIM. However, deep differences in interpretation methodology still cause tension among Muslims. In addition, the lack of understanding of Arabic and other tafsir sciences also exacerbates inaccurate interpretations. This study proposes solutions such as the establishment of a reference center for authentic interpretation, improving Arabic language education, and increasing the role of scholars and the community in disseminating relevant and moderate interpretations. With cooperation between the government, scholars and society, authentic interpretation of the Qur'an can be further developed and provide appropriate guidance for Muslims in Malaysia.
